Key Takeaways:

  • The Estée Lauder Companies has made significant investments in and formed partnerships with several biotechnology companies and research institutions.
  • The company is reimagining ingredient sourcing through green and science-driven solutions.
  • A new Exuud partnership introduces biodegradable and heat-free fragrance technology.

The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has utilized biotechnology before but recently reaffirmed its commitment to it with the opening of its new Biotech hub in Olen, Belgium, as well as a series of strategic partnerships and collaborations.

The biotech hub opened in December 2024, located near its manufacturing and distribution campus in Oevel, Belgium. The hub processes raw, nature-inspired materials derived from plants, yeast, and bacteria, reshaping the way materials are sourced and developed.

ELC has further illuminated the way for biotechnology in its partnership with MIT. The collaboration with Langer and Jaklenec Labs at MIT, which occurred in February 2025, explores biopolymers that protect the skin from environmental stressors, as well as sunlight, but embrace green chemistry, as well as biodegradable delivery systems.

In January of 2025, ELC began a partnership with Exxud, a start-up biotech company that uses its Soliqaire technology to transform liquid fragrances into solid, biodegradable beads made from plant-derived materials. The technology eliminates the need for heat or aerosol sprays, offering a cleaner and longer-lasting scent. This collaboration highlights ELC's commitment to finding efficient ways to unite sustainability and innovation.

As a leader in beauty, The Estée Lauder Companies is pushing the boundaries of innovation in a way that combines science, technology, and environmental responsibility. By expanding its biotechnical capabilities and building mindful partnerships, ELC is reimagining new ways to source ingredients and develop formulas that meet consumer expectations.
